St. Augustine

Welcome to beautiful St. Augustine, Florida. Having first been settled in 1565 by Spain’s Juan

Pedro Menendez de Aviles, we are the oldest permanent European-settled colony in America

forty-two years before the English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. Over the years the area

has seen the flags of England, France, and Spain. In 1763 Spain ceded St. Augustine to

England, but the Treaty of Paris ceded it back to Spain in 1783. In 1819 Florida was ceded to

the United States by Spain.

News

Nothing travels faster in a small town than news, and St. Augustine is no exception. In 1894 our

daily newspaper, The St. Augustine Record, was first published. Today we are a “big little town”

and I guarantee you’ll have a wonderful sense of privacy but with the benefit of good chit-chat at

any number of quaint local shops, restaurants, and pubs. Most of us began like you --- we visited

the city and either stayed or returned at some point up the road to make it our home. Most news

In our newspaper is good news in our small town and if you decide to make us you place of residence, we’ll welcome you with open arms and friendly smiles.
